3 MUST KNOW Things Before Getting Invisalign

If you’re considering Invisalign, there are a few things that most people are not told up front.

At Happier Smiles Orthodontics in Escondido, we believe in full transparency so you can make the correct choice as far as what treatment option is best for you. Invisalign is an incredible technology — but understanding how it works will help you get the best possible results!!

Here are the three most important things you need to know before starting Aligner treatment.

1. Invisalign Only Works If You Wear It 20–22 Hours a Day

You should only remove them for:

  • Eating

  • Drinking anything other than water

  • Brushing and flossing

If aligners are not worn consistently:

  • Teeth may not “track” correctly

  • Treatment time can increase

  • Additional refinement trays may be needed

Invisalign is removable — which makes it convenient — but that also means success depends on patient compliance.

When worn correctly and for most of the day, Invisalign is extremely effective and predictable.

2. You Will Likely Have Attachments – bumps on the teeth (And That’s a Good Thing)

Attachments act like anchors or pressure points.

They help the aligners:

  • Grip the tooth properly

  • Rotate teeth

  • Move roots, not just crowns

  • Control complex movements

Without attachments, certain movements would not be possible or predictable.

They are:

  • Subtle

  • Tooth-colored

  • Strategically placed

  • Removed at the end of treatment with no pain

3. You May Need IPR (Interproximal Reduction)

What Is IPR?

IPR is a very small, controlled reduction of enamel between teeth to create space for movement.

At our office, we are extremely conservative.

We typically perform 0.2 mm or less per contact.

Why Is IPR Needed?

IPR helps:

  • Reduce crowding

  • Prevent flaring of front teeth

  • Improve long-term stability

  • Reduce black triangles

When done correctly by a board-certified orthodontist, IPR is safe, precise, and minimally invasive. And no, it does not hurt with the device we use in the office!

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Invisalign hurt?

Most patients feel mild soreness or pressure for 2–3 days when switching aligners. This is normal and means the teeth are moving.

Will people see my attachments?

They are tooth-colored and subtle. Most people do not notice them with the material we use in the office.

Is IPR painful?

No. It does not require numbing or anything and is very conservative. You just feel vibration slightly.

How long does Invisalign take?

Treatment typically ranges from 6–20 months depending on complexity!
