Do Braces Hurt? What Parents & Kids Should Really Expect

One of the most common questions parents ask before starting orthodontic treatment is simple: “Will braces hurt?”
The short answer: braces can cause temporary discomfort, but they should not be painful — and most kids adjust much faster than parents expect.

At Happier Smiles Orthodontics, we believe that understanding what to expect helps kids feel confident and parents feel prepared. Here’s what families should really know before starting braces.

First Common Question: Does Getting Braces Put On Hurt?

Short answer: No.

  • Placing braces is not painful, its so easy- you just sit there!

  • No needles, drilling, or numbing

  • Most kids say it feels “weird” or “tight,” not painful once the wires are placed

  • Appointment usually takes 1–1.5 hours to put top & bottom braces on

Second Common Question: When Does Discomfort Usually Start?

Mild soreness typically begins:

  • 4–24 hours after braces are placed

  • After adjustment  (tightening) visits

  • When new wires or elastics are added

This soreness:

  • Feels like pressure or tenderness

  • Peaks around day 1–3

  • Improves steadily over the first week

Good to know: What Kind of Pain Is Normal (and What’s Not)?

Normal discomfort includes:

  • Tender teeth when biting

  • Mild jaw soreness

  • Lips or cheeks rubbing at first

Not normal (call your orthodontist):

  • Sharp or severe pain

  • Sores that don’t heal

  • Broken brackets or poking wires

Third common question: How Can Parents Help Their Child Feel Better?

Simple, effective tips:

  • Soft foods for a few days (pasta, yogurt, smoothies)

  • Cold drinks or popsicles

  • Orthodontic wax for rubbing spots

  • Children’s acetaminophen or ibuprofen (if approved by your pediatrician & no allergies)

  •  Avoid sticky or hard foods early on — they can increase discomfort.

A very common question: Are Braces More Uncomfortable Than Clear Aligners?

It depends on your pain tolerance..

  • Braces: More pressure and possible soreness during adjustment appointments

  • Clear aligners: More subtle soreness but still there when you change your trays!

Braces shouldn’t be something kids fear — and with the right preparation and care, most children do just fine!
