Most comprehensive orthodontic treatment takes approximately 12–24 months, although some cases may be shorter or longer. Treatment time depends on factors such as the complexity of the bite, the amount of tooth movement needed, the type of treatment, growth and development, and—very importantly—patient compliance.
Your orthodontist can give you a more personalized estimate after evaluating your teeth and bite.
What Determines How Long You’ll Have Braces?
Two patients can start braces on the same day and finish months apart. That doesn’t necessarily mean one person’s treatment isn’t progressing properly.
Several factors affect treatment time.
1. How Complex Is Your Bite?
Straightening crooked teeth is only one part of orthodontic treatment.
Your orthodontist is also evaluating how your upper and lower teeth fit together. Overbites, underbites, crossbites, open bites, significant crowding, impacted teeth, and other bite problems can require additional movements and treatment time.
A smile may begin looking straighter relatively quickly while there is still important work happening with the bite.
2. How Much Do Your Teeth Need to Move?
Minor spacing or alignment may require less time than severe crowding or a significant bite correction.
Teeth also need to be moved gradually and safely through the surrounding bone. Trying to move them faster isn’t necessarily better.
Our goal isn’t simply to finish treatment quickly. It’s to achieve a healthy, beautiful result that is planned for long-term stability.
3. Can You Make Braces Work Faster?
One of the biggest things patients can control is compliance.
Following your orthodontist’s instructions can make a meaningful difference in keeping treatment on track.
That includes:
- Wearing rubber bands exactly as instructed
- Keeping scheduled orthodontic appointments
- Taking care of your braces and avoiding broken brackets
- Maintaining good brushing and flossing
- Following instructions for appliances or aligners
For clear-aligner patients, wearing aligners for the prescribed amount of time each day is especially important.
Skipping rubber bands, repeatedly breaking appliances, missing appointments, or not wearing clear aligners as directed can delay progress.
4. Are Clear Aligners Faster Than Braces?
Not necessarily.
Braces and clear aligners—including systems such as Spark™ and Invisalign®—are different tools orthodontists can use to move teeth.
The fastest or most appropriate option depends on the movements your particular smile requires.
Some cases can be treated very efficiently with clear aligners, while others may be better suited for braces. For more complex orthodontic problems, the experience and treatment planning of the orthodontist can be just as important as the appliance being used.
Does Age Affect How Long Orthodontic Treatment Takes?
Children, teenagers, and adults can all achieve excellent orthodontic results.
Growing patients may have certain treatment opportunities because their jaws are still developing. Adults are no longer growing, and some complex adult cases may require different treatment strategies.
But being an adult does not mean you’re too old for orthodontic treatment.
