Orthodontic Expanders- A Closer Look

What is an Expander?
An expander is an orthodontic device designed to widen the upper jaw or maxilla, a process known as palatal expansion. It’s used to address various dental issues, including crowded teeth, a narrow upper arch, mouth breathing, snoring, and misalignment of teeth and the jaws.

How Does an Expander Work?
The expander consists of a metal frame with bands that fit over the upper teeth, connected to a screw or key. When the key is turned, it applies gentle pressure to the palate (roof of the mouth), gradually widening the upper jaw to allow proper teeth alignment. In younger patients, the maxillary suture is more movable, making expansion easier. Where as in adults it may be more difficult and we need to discuss some alternative options.

Why Would Someone Benefit from an Expander?
We recommend expanders to treat several conditions: crowding, narrow maxilla contributing to crossbites and breathing problems, and specific malocclusions like underbites. There are various types of expanders, including fixed and removable ones. At Happier Smiles Orthodontics we use 3D Printed Expanders which fit comfortably like a glove.

It’s recommended for children to be evaluated by an orthodontist by age 7 to determine if early treatment with an expander is necessary– as expansion is simpler and more predictable during childhood.
