The answer is: not every child does.

Many children who come in for an early evaluation simply need to be monitored as they grow. But when certain bite, growth, or eruption problems are present, treating them at the right time can make a meaningful difference.
Quick Answer: What Is Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment?
Phase 1 orthodontic treatment, also called early interceptive treatment, is orthodontic care performed while a child still has a combination of baby and permanent teeth. It is typically used to address specific problems with the bite, jaw development, available space, or tooth eruption that may benefit from correction while a child is still growing.
The goal is not simply to make the front teeth look straighter it is only done when there is something severe going on.
When Is Phase 1 Treatment Actually Necessary?
A board-certified orthodontist may recommend early treatment when waiting could make a problem more difficult to correct or allow it to cause additional problems.
Examples may include:
- Crossbites that affect normal jaw function or growth
- Traumatic bites where teeth are contacting improperly
- Significant underbites or certain severe overbites
- Severe crowding or lack of space for developing permanent teeth
- Problems with the eruption of permanent teeth
- Certain jaw growth discrepancies
The important distinction is that Phase 1 treatment should have a specific purpose.
Why Not Just Wait Until All the Adult Teeth Come In?
For many children, waiting is exactly what we recommend.
But certain orthodontic problems are more effectively addressed while the jaws are still developing. In those situations, early treatment may help improve the bite, guide growth or eruption, and create a healthier environment for the permanent teeth.
For example, if a child’s bite is causing traumatic contact between teeth, correcting that problem early may help prevent continued damage while the child grows.
That’s very different from starting treatment simply because a few front teeth look crooked.
Does Phase 1 Mean My Child Will Need Braces Twice?
Possibly—but that’s not the purpose of early treatment.
Phase 1 treatment addresses a specific problem at a time when intervention can be most beneficial. Afterward, we monitor growth and the eruption of the remaining permanent teeth.
Some children may later benefit from comprehensive braces or clear aligner treatment during adolescence but it may be more cosmetic and optional. Others may need less treatment than they otherwise would have.
The goal of Phase 1 isn’t necessarily to eliminate future orthodontic treatment. It’s to address the right problem at the right time.
