Phase 1 vs Phase 2 Orthodontic Treatment: What Parents Should Know

Not every child needs both phases — and many don’t need Phase 1 at all. Let’s break it down!

What Is Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment? (Early Treatment)

Phase 1 usually starts between ages 7–9 and focuses on guiding jaw growth or any severe issues present early at a young age.

Phase 1 may be recommended if your child has:

  • Severe crowding

  • Crossbites or underbites

  • Very narrow jaws

  • Protruding front teeth (higher trauma risk)

  • Airway or breathing concerns

Common Phase 1 treatments include:

  • Palatal expanders

  • Partial front braces

  • Space maintainers

Main Goal: Make room for adult teeth and prevent bigger problems later.

What Is Phase 2/ Comprehensive Orthodontic Treatment?

Phase 2 usually starts between ages 11–14, once all adult teeth are in.

This phase focuses on:

  • Straightening teeth

  • Correcting the bite

  • Fine-tuning the smile

Phase 2 treatment options:

  • Braces

  • Clear aligners

Goal: Create a healthy, straight, long-lasting smile- that lasts forever.

Does Phase 1 Mean My Child Will Definitely Need Phase 2?

Often, yes — but Phase 2 is usually shorter and easier if Phase 1 was done.

However:

  • Some kids only need Phase 1

  • Some kids skip Phase 1 entirely

  • Every child’s growth is different

That’s why early evaluations are about monitoring, not rushing into treatment.

Is Phase 1 Always Necessary?

No.
Phase 1 is ONLY recommended when a problem is severe or likely to get worse if left untreated.

If everything looks fine, we often just:

  • Monitor growth

  • Take photos or scans

  • Recheck growth every 6–12 months

To Recap/ Benefits of Phase 1:

  • Helps reduce the need for tooth extractions later

  • Can prevent jaw surgery in severe cases

  • Makes Phase 2 simpler and more predictable

  • Addresses issues while kids are still growing
