We typically recommend full-time wear for the first 6 to 12 months, then a switch to nightly wear, and long term most patients keep their smile by wearing a retainer a few nights each week. Types of Retainers
There are several kinds of retainers, but the three most common are:
- Clear (Essix) retainers: comfortable, nearly invisible, and made from durable plastic. These are our preferred choice at Happier Smiles, and one set is included with every treatment.
- Hawley retainers: the traditional removable retainer with a metal wire across the front. Durable and adjustable, but more visible.
- Fixed (bonded) retainers: a thin metal wire bonded behind the front teeth so it is always working and never lost.
Each option has pros and cons, so your orthodontist will recommend the type that best fits your case.
How Long Do Retainers Last?
A retainer does not last forever. For most patients, a retainer lasts between 2 and 7 years, depending on a few factors:
- Material and type: clear plastic, acrylic, and bonded wire each wear differently.
- Oral habits: if you clench or grind your teeth at night, your retainer will wear down sooner.

When Do You Need a New Retainer?
Bring your retainer in, or ask us for a replacement, when you notice any of these signs:
- Poor fit: if it no longer seats fully, it may not be holding your teeth in place.
- Discomfort: a retainer should feel comfortable; new pain or irritation can mean it is damaged or no longer fitting.
- Cracks or breaks: even small fractures worsen over time and weaken the retainer.
- Permanent staining: buildup that will not clean off is a sign it is time for a fresh set.
- Loss: if it is gone, you need a replacement to keep your teeth from shifting.
