TOP 5 BIGGEST MYTHS IN ORTHODONTICS

It is so easy to get misinformation nowadays. Board Certified Orthodontist Dr. Nee here and here, we are debunking the most common myths we hear every day.ย

MYTH 1) You do Orthodontics when you are older and have all adult teeth in.ย

FACT 1) Orthodontists must evaluate children as early as age 7 to detect potential orthodontic issues and may recommend early intervention, which can prevent more serious problems from developing later on. Seeing your child at age 7 does NOT necessarily mean we will start treatment, but we will conduct a complimentary exam to provide peace of mind and ensure there are no early intervention needs or the need for early treatment.

MYTH 2) Orthodontics is ONLY for kids!!

FACT 2) You are never too old for orthodontic treatment.ย  The physiological process of moving teeth through bone into their desired position occurs during treatment regardless of whether it is in a child or an adult. Today, many adults opt for treatment to achieve a healthy, straight smile, boosting confidence and enhancing overall appearance.

MYTH 3) Orthodontics is too expensive.ย

FACT 3) We believe everyone should be able to afford their dream smile and the confidence that comes with it. You may be surprised that dental insurance might cover a large part of orthodontic treatment and financing options are available to make treatment affordable!

MYTH 4) Orthodontics are only for cosmetic purposes.

FACT 4) Orthodontic treatment improves oral function & health by preventing food and plaque build up, reducing the risk of cavities, periodontal disease, and other issues, as well as addressing over or underbite and TMJ disorder.ย

MYTH 5) Once your orthodontic treatment is complete, your teeth will stay in their new position forever.

FACT 5) To maintain the alignment of your teeth after active orthodontic treatment, wearing a retainer at night forever is essential as our teeth naturally shift over time!
