What Is the Most Painful Part of Braces?

One of the very first questions we get from our patients when it comes to getting braces is “Will it hurt?”  At Happier Smiles Orthodontics in Escondido, we know this is a common concern—and we’re here to walk you through what to expect, and how to stay as comfortable as possible throughout your treatment.

1. Initial Placement of Braces

The most discomfort tends to happen in the first few days after your braces are placed. Your teeth are adjusting to pressure for the first time, which can cause a dull, achy sensation—similar to muscle soreness after a workout. The brackets and wires may also irritate the cheeks or lips until your mouth gets used to them.

*Tip: Stick to soft foods like yogurt, smoothies, or mashed potatoes during this period, and use orthodontic wax to reduce irritation.

2. Wire Adjustments or Aligner Changes

Every time you come in for an adjustment (or change your clear aligners), you may feel soreness for a day or two. This is normal and a sign that your teeth are moving! The discomfort is usually mild and fades quickly.

*Over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol or Advil can help ease temporary soreness.

3. Rubber Bands or Elastics

Some patients need rubber bands to correct their bite. While these are essential for proper alignment, they can create soreness in the jaw or cause additional sensitivity when first used.

*Wearing your elastics exactly as instructed helps minimize discomfort and shortens treatment time!

4. Accidental Poking Wires or Loose Brackets

Occasionally, a wire might shift or a bracket might loosen—leading to irritation or soreness in your mouth. This can be one of the more uncomfortable situations, but it’s usually quick to fix with a visit to our office.

* Keep orthodontic wax handy, and don’t hesitate to call us for a same-day comfort visit.
